A Marx Generator Based on Series Hybrid Energy Storage

Hybrid energy storage (HES), a revolutionary alternative to traditional pulsed power storage like capacitive or inductive energy storage, offers distinct advantages. HES is beneficial for generating dexterous waveforms and shortening rise time. According to the hybrid connections of the capacitor and inductor, HES can be categorized as series HES (s-HES) and parallel HES (p-HES). In this paper, we have proposed a new Marx generator based on s-HES, which not only inherits the merits of HES but also boosts the output voltage. Besides, two MOSFET switches control each stage of this novel Marx circuit. This endows it with the capability to operate in three unique modes: double-voltage mode, square-wave mode, and double-pulse mode. Through experiments on a 10-stage s-HES Marx generator, its features are validated. In double-voltage mode, simultaneous switch activation doubles the output, yielding a pulse of ∼17 kV peak, ∼15 ns rise time, and 21 ns pulse width. The square-wave mode produces a ∼ 9.2 kV, 33 ns width quasi-square waveform. The double pulse mode generates 100 pulses/s at 50 Hz. The proposed generator showcases outstanding versatility and holds great promise for applications in scientific research, industry, and biomedicine.
