Comparison of Performances of Two Swept-Source Optical Coherence Tomography-based Biometers for Measurements of Eyes with Long Axial Lengths

Purpose: To compare the performances of two swept-source optical coherence tomography-based biometers for measuring ocular biometry and predicting postoperative refractive errors in eyes with long axial lengths (ALs).Methods: The ALs, anterior chamber depths (ACDs), corneal curvatures, and lens thicknesses of 23 eyes of 17 patients with ALs of ≥ 27 mm measured using the IOL Master® 700 and ARGOS® before cataract surgery were compared. The predicted and actual postoperative refractive errors were compared to assess the accuracy of the two devices. Results: The study participants comprised nine males (12 eyes) and eight females (11 eyes) with a mean age of 63.4 years. The two devices showed good agreement for ocular biometry, with high intraclass correlation coefficients for AL (0.994), ACD (0.972), corneal curvature (0.994), and lens thickness (0.943). The AL measured using the IOL Master® 700 was significantly higher than that measured using ARGOS® (<i>p</i> = 0.013). In contrast, the ACD measured using the IOL Master® 700 was lower than that measured using ARGOS® (<i>p</i> < 0.001). The mean prediction error for the IOL Master® 700 was significantly lower than that for the ARGOS® (<i>p</i> = 0.043). However, the mean absolute prediction errors did not differ significantly for the two devices (<i>p</i> = 0.601).Conclusions: The IOL Master® 700 and ARGOS® showed good agreement for eyes with long AL. However, significant differences in AL and ACD were observed. The two devices were comparable in predicting postoperative refractive errors.
