Commercialization of Blue Carbon in the State of Maranhão

The mangroves of Maranhão are among the largest and most important transition ecosystems on the planet, constituting powerful sinks for greenhouse gases due to the "blue carbon" phenomenon. This work investigates in depth the potential for sequestration, storage, and economic valuation of blue carbon in the Maranhão mangroves, incorporating analysis of quantitative secondary data from the Blue Carbon Platform and a critical review of recent literature. The study highlights the role of mangroves in maintaining biodiversity, coastal protection, and in the context of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) mechanisms, such as REDD+. The main results indicate a stock of over 1.1 billion tons of CO₂ in Maranhão's primary areas, reinforcing Maranhão's ecological centrality in the face of current climate demands and opening concrete opportunities for regional sustainable development based on environmental and social justice.
