Enhanced Electro‐Optic Switching in High‐Dielectric TiO 2 ‐Doped Nanoscale Liquid Crystal Droplets

Abstract Polymer‐encapsulated, optically isotropic subwavelength birefringent liquid crystal (LC) droplets offer a versatile platform for next‐generation flexible displays and tunable nano‐photonics, owing to their fast‐switching, field‐off transparency and symmetric viewing angles. However, the thick polymer matrix encasing nano‐sized LC droplets often restricts electric field penetration, thereby suppressing field‐induced birefringence and degrading electro‐optical dynamics. To resolve this bottleneck, high‐dielectric titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated into the LC/pre‐polymer mixture. Upon UV‐induced phase separation, TiO 2 ‐doped nano‐sized polymer dispersed liquid crystal (nano‐PDLC) are fabricated, where NPs are uniformly dispersed within both the LC droplets and polymer matrix. These embedded TiO 2 NPs act as pseudo‐conductive channels, enhancing interfacial polarization and locally amplifying the electric fields via field‐enhancement effect. At an optimized TiO 2 loading of 1.0 wt%, the composite achieves enormous enhancements: Kerr constant increases by ≈46%, dielectric permittivity by ≈38%, threshold and operating fields decreases by 26 and 22%, respectively and switching times are accelerated by 35% surpassing conventional nano‐PDLCs. The close agreement between experimental and theoretical threshold fields substantiates the proposed field‐enhancement mechanism. The outcomes highlight a promising strategy toward high‐performance, energy‐efficient nano‐PDLCs for advanced optoelectronic and flexible photonic technologies.
