Controlled preparation and phase evolution of vanadium oxycarbide ceramics for application in molten salt systems

Abstract Vanadium‐based ceramics exhibit metallic properties comparable to vanadium carbides and nitrides, making them promising candidates for various high‐performance applications. In this study, the synthesis conditions of VC x O y ceramics were systematically explored through thermodynamic calculations and experimental investigations. The effects of precursor molar ratios, synthesis temperature, and holding time on phase composition and material properties were analyzed in detail. The optimal VC x O y ceramics were successfully synthesized under an argon atmosphere with a V/C molar ratio of 1:2.18 at 1500°C for 2 h. The synthesis mechanism was further elucidated, and the resulting ceramics displayed excellent physical and chemical stability. Moreover, the electrochemical performance of the ceramics as consumable anodes for vanadium extraction was evaluated, providing a novel and effective strategy for the preparation of high‐purity vanadium metal via molten salt electrolysis.
