Synthesis and Performance Evaluation of Pt–M Fine Nanoparticles on High‐Surface‐Area Carbon Support for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity in PEFC

Pt‐skin structured Pt–M alloy catalysts draw significant attention owing to their high Pt utilization, enhanced activity, and low Pt loading. In this study, 3 nm Pt–M (M = Co, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Cr) fine nanoparticles supported on Ketjen black, a carbon material with a relatively high surface area, are prepared using a novel method that combines dry mixing with rapid heating and quenching, followed by post‐treatment. The catalyst deactivation behavior is assessed through the formation of Pt‐skin surfaces over 10 000 square‐wave potential cycles under practical fuel cell operating conditions. Among the catalysts, PtCo/KB‐AT exhibits enhanced stability in the oxygen reduction reaction, corresponding to a slight change in particle size.
