The purpose of this study is to explore and compare similarities and differences of students’ elementary-level English speaking training performances and motivation for using teaching materials when the traditional teaching method and the augmented reality teaching method are applied. This study adopted the pretest and posttest experimental design. In general, a total of 16 students from a university of science and technology participated in this study. The tools of data collection were English oral tests, teaching material motivation questionnaires, and structured interviews. The method of data analysis was a combination of quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results of this study showed that the augmented reality teaching method was superior to the traditional teaching method in terms of teaching material motivation and learning outcomes. In addition, the results of qualitative research also presented the advantages and disadvantages of using the traditional teaching method and the augmented reality teaching method for English speaking learning. The results of this study can be offered to the university students of science and technology in Taiwan for reference when they engage in elementary-level English speaking training.
