Selecting Hadronic Supernova Remnants for Targeted Galactic Neutrino Searches
Galactic supernova remnants (SNR) are thought to accelerate cosmic rays to several PeV energies, but this has yet to be confirmed through gamma ray observations. While several galactic objects have been detected with photon energies $E_\gamma \approx 100$ TeV indicating the source is a PeVatron, it is difficult to determine whether these gamma rays are the byproducts of hadronic or leptonic interactions. A corresponding neutrino signature would provide an unambiguous signal that high energy protons underwent hadronic interactions, $p + p \rightarrow p + n + \pi^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ + \nu_\mu$. We evaluate the spectra and environments of the known sample of Galactic SNRs to identify those most likely to be hadronic for a corresponding neutrino stacking analysis with IceCube.
