Xenon adsorption-induced flexibility of the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-4 observed by <i>in situ</i> 129 Xe NMR spectroscopy

<i>In situ</i> 129Xe NMR spectroscopy reveals an unexpected, xenon adsorption-induced flexibility of ZIF-4. Beyond a certain threshold pressure, xenon induces a structural transition at low temperature. This behaviour is in contrast to CO2, where the material remains rigid, as shown by <i>in situ</i>13C NMR spectroscopy. Adsorbed gas species are significantly confined in the narrow and anisotropic pore system with restricted atomic/molecular reorientation.

Abstract

<i>In situ</i> 129Xe NMR spectroscopy reveals an unexpected, xenon adsorption-induced flexibility of ZIF-4. Beyond a certain threshold pressure, xenon induces a structural transition at low temperature. This behaviour is in contrast to CO2, where the material remains rigid, as shown by <i>in situ</i>13C NMR spectroscopy. Adsorbed gas species are significantly confined in the narrow and anisotropic pore system with restricted atomic/molecular reorientation.
