Using UV-electro-peroxone process for treating industrial wastewater; RSM and machine learning statistical analysis, energy consumption and kinetic studies
• Significant amounts of hydroxyl radicals can be efficiently produced in the photo-Eperoxone(UV-EP) process • In COD removal, the first-order fitted the best with k values at 0.0283 min −1 and the half-life of the reaction was 24.5 min. • To explore the effect of operational parameters, the RSM combined with statistical mathematical, and machine learning techniques were used. • The SER during the photolysis, electrolysis, ozonation, and UV-EP, were 13.33, 3.44, 0.0182, and 1.69kwh/gCOD removed , respectively • Limitations, the practical application, and the strengths and weaknesses of the UV-EP process were explored. In this work, the UV-electro-peroxone (UV-EP) technique has been used for the remediation of petrochemical effluent. The influence of different critical factors like reaction time, ozone dosage, applied current, and pH was optimized utilizing central composite design (CCD) and machine learning techniques. The best predicted conditions by the CCD were pH at 7.0, 80 min of treatment time, applied current at 1.68 A, and the flow rate of ozone at 1.4 L.min -1 . The actual and predicted COD removal were 87.5 and 86.4 %, respectively. To explore the impact of each operational factors on the response, the Pareto chart was used and the treatment time has a notable influence on the COD removal. Both of the CCD and artificial neural network (ANN) model perform well in prediction proficiency with the R 2 at 0.9998, and 0.9986, respectively. In single ozonation, electrolysis, and photolysis processes, the COD removal was 41, 19.5, and 6 %, respectively and the COD removal was increased by integration of the mentioned processes. In the kinetic study of COD removal, the first-order fit was the best with k values at 0.0283 min −1 . Also, the half-life of the degradation reaction ( t 1 2 ) was obtained at 24.5 min. The values of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total dissolved solids (TDS), and total organic carbon (TOC) were decreased considerably. At best conditions, the amount of COD was reduced from 10 to 1. 25 kg/m 3 . Increasing the AOS, COS, and BOD 5 to COD ratio of the final effluent confirmed the improvement of biodegradability properties of the treatment method. The specific energy requirements (SER) in COD removal during the photolysis, electrolysis, ozonation, and UV-EP were 13.33, 3.44, 0.0182, and 1.69kwh/gCOD removed , respectively. The limitations of the research, the practical application of UV-EP for wastewater treatment, and the strengths and weaknesses of the process were explored in more detail.
