Novel Surface‐Based Bézier Metamaterials: A Higher Degree of Parametrization toward Tailoring the Effective Properties under Compression

The development of surface‐based mechanical metamaterials has been potentialized by additive manufacturing and parametrization techniques. Herein, novel surface‐based metamaterials inspired by the gyroid minimal surface are designed, tailoring their mechanical properties by a finer degree using a parametrization based on cubic‐based Bézier curves. The use of such curves allows the user to customize the constituent surface at a higher detailed level. This new parametrization presented allows for a fine tuning of the mechanical properties of surface‐based metamaterials. This methodology can tune the stress–strain response and the corresponding effective properties. The effective stiffness of the metamaterials designed can be adjusted within a ±15% range compared to the original gyroid structure. The length of the plateau can be tuned up to a 55% of the total strain applied. Hence, the use of the parametrization presented can benefit the design of mechanical metamaterials with tailored properties for energy absorption applications.
