Beyond Classroom Walls: The New Psycho-Social Ecology of GenAI
While we educators debate whether to ban Generative AI or integrate it into lesson plans, millions of students are already forming intimate relationships with AI systems outside the classroom. They're confiding in chatbots, seeking therapy from unlicensed AI companions, and trusting artificial entities with their deepest vulnerabilities. The real disruption of generative AI in education isn't happening in our relatively carefully controlled learning environments—it's reshaping the psychological and social landscape our students inhabit daily. Whatever we may do in our curated learning spaces, the most consequential educational transformation is happening outside of them.
