An Information Technology Framework for Organizational Circular Economy Practices

The circular economy is an alternative economic model that supports environmental stewardship. Unlike the traditional linear model, the circular economy emphasizes the $4 R$ (reduce, reuse, recycle, redesign) for the environment, and economic and social benefits. Information technologies have unlimited potential for the circular economy. However, despite the circular economy values, there is a lack of a clear roadmap and a structured approach to leverage information technology for sustainability acceleration. Therefore, this study aims to develop a strategic information technology framework to support information technology practices. A systematic review was conducted to identify existing frameworks, challenges, and best practices. The findings propose a framework that emphasizes the role of internal capabilities, including financial strength, resources, human capital, and innovation capabilities alongside external factors such as government support, customised based on organizational size and sectoral needs for adaptability and practical implementation. This study contributes to sustainability goals by providing a structured pathway for organizations to leverage information technology that aligns with circular economy and sustainable goals.
