Optimizing Sustainable Interior Design Using Artificial Intelligence and Greenship Certification
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undergone rapid advancements, offering notable potential to improve sustainability efforts in interior design. This research investigates the effectiveness of AI-generated interior designs in fulfilling sustainability standards outlined by the Greenship certification, Indonesia’s acknowledged benchmark for eco-friendly interior spaces. Concentrating on bedroom and bathroom designs in residential settings, the study adopts a mixed-method approach, integrating quantitative evaluations of Greenship point attainment with qualitative assessments from expert reviewers. The AI-assisted design process applied refined prompt engineering to address essential sustainability factors, such as energy efficiency, water conservation, resource management, indoor environmental quality, and building environment oversight. Findings indicate that AI can successfully optimize energy consumption, material choices, and occupant comfort, achieving an average Greenship compliance score above 26%. Nonetheless, certain obstacles persist, particularly in tackling broader environmental management issues and fostering creative design solutions, thereby maintaining the critical role of human expertise. The research emphasizes the value of precise prompt formulation to improve AI outcomes and offers practical insights for designers and AI developers aiming to embed sustainability principles into automated design processes. Ultimately, these insights advance the role of AI in green building initiatives and encourage the integration of emerging technologies with stringent sustainability criteria.
