Enterprise Risk Management in Hazardous Waste Processing for Industrial Environmental Safety
The rapid expansion of industrial activities has led to a significant increase in hazardous and toxic (B3) waste, presenting complex risks to environmental and human health. To address these challenges, this study examines the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) in industrial waste processing companies as a framework to standardize and enhance risk mitigation practices. Focusing on a company engaged in B3 waste management, the research aims to analyze how ERM principles are applied to identify, assess, and control operational risks throughout key processes, including transportation, collection, and treatment. A qualitative research design was adopted, incorporating in-depth interviews and document analysis to evaluate internal risk governance structures, including adherence to ISO standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The findings reveal that the company successfully categorizes risks based on severity and likelihood, with critical risks such as inadequate ventilation and improper waste handling receiving prioritized mitigation strategies. ERM tools facilitate the adoption of appropriate responses, including risk avoidance, reduction, and transfer, thereby enhancing operational safety and regulatory compliance. The study concludes that integrating ERM into industrial waste processing not only improves risk visibility and decision-making but also promotes sustainable and responsible waste management practices. These results underscore the importance of a structured risk management approach in industries handling hazardous materials and provide a reference model for similar enterprises seeking to strengthen their environmental and operational resilience.
