The Origin of Model-View-Presenter Pattern by Means of System Decomposition

The paper presents the concept of the systemic origin of the components of the MVP pattern, based on the fundamental notion of a system. In the context of software development, it is proposed to consider "system" and "program block" as interchangeable concepts. A block includes variables that serve as carriers of the system's state, as well as operations that modify this state. Nested blocks are treated as subsystems. It is shown that the decomposition of a block into a user interface subsystem and a business logic subsystem produces elements of the MVP pattern. The user interface subsystem consists of a view and a presenter, while the business logic subsystem includes a model and a presenter. The presenter acts as a common boundary between the two subsystems. The view and model are implemented as objects in an object-oriented approach. The variables of the block become fields of the object, and the operations from the block are included in the methods of the object. The recursive application of the described decomposition procedure to nested blocks allows define the structure of MVP components for the application as a whole.
