Selective and Validated Spectrophotometric Methods for Determination of Atenolol with MBTH Reagent

This research aims to develop and validate new and simple spectrophotometric methods for the estimation of Atenolol, one of the widely used beta-blocker drugs, based on its reaction with the reagent 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone (MBTH). The methodology is based on the formation of colored products resulting from the reaction of atenolol with the MBTH reagent in an appropriate medium, and then measuring the absorbance using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer to accurately determine the concentration of the compound The reaction conditions were carefully studied and optimized, including the pH level, where it was found that the optimal pH is 2, the reaction time, where the best time is 15 minutes, and the optimal concentration is 50 ppm to achieve maximum absorbance and the highest stability of the colored product. A complete investigation of the analytical method was conducted according to ICH standards, including verification of linearity, accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and applicability in pharmaceutical analyses The results showed that the developed method possesses a high degree of selectivity and sensitivity, with a good linear range extending from low to medium concentrations of atenolol. The method was successfully tested on commercial pharmaceutical preparations, and the results showed excellent agreement with the nominal values, demonstrating the method's effectiveness in practical applications This study represents an important contribution to the field of spectroscopic analysis, as it provides a simple and economical alternative to complex chromatographic methods, and opens new horizons for the use of the MBTH reagent in the analysis of other drugs with similar functional groups.
