HEMORRAGIA PÓS-PARTO EM PERSPECTIVA: UMA DÉCADA DE DESAFIOS NA PARAÍBA FRENTE AO NORDESTE BRASILEIRO (2014-2024)

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting for approximately 25% of maternal deaths, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In Brazil, it remains a major public health issue, ranking among the main direct causes of maternal death along with hypertensive disorders and puerperal infections. This study aimed to analyze maternal mortality associated with PPH in Paraíba compared to the broader scenario of the Brazilian Northeast between 2014 and 2024. This was a descriptive and retrospective epidemiological study, using secondary data from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) through the TabNet platform, considering records of maternal deaths related to PPH. Incomplete data were excluded, and ethical principles were respected according to national guidelines. During the analyzed period, the Northeast region showed an increasing trend in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR), with 2021 recording the highest rate (113.1 deaths per 100,000 live births), reflecting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Paraíba, the greatest vulnerability was observed among women aged 30–39 years, of mixed race, single, and with low educational attainment, confirming the influence of social determinants on outcomes. The persistence of PPH as a significant cause of maternal mortality highlights weaknesses in obstetric care, structural insufficiencies, and socioeconomic inequalities. Findings reinforce the need for effective public policies, professional training, and strengthening of maternal and child health care networks to reduce deaths and promote greater equity in health.
