Advanced structural interventions for slope stabilization and disaster resilience

This study addresses the critical issue of slope instability in Chuinj Village, Upper Chitral District, Pakistan. This region is highly vulnerable to landslides and debris flows due to steep slopes, loose alluvial deposits, and heavy rainfall. Through a comprehensive site assessment, we identified approximately 60–65 acres of hazardous land and 60 houses at high risk. To mitigate these risks, we proposed a slope stabilization strategy involving outward-sloping terracing and bund reinforcement. These measures effectively redistribute gravitational forces, minimize erosion, and improve drainage. By implementing these measures the FoS improved from a critical initial value of 0.828 to over 1.5, significantly reducing the risk of slope failure. This research paper also highlights the socio-economic and environmental benefits of the proposed interventions. This slope stabilization project helps protect people, their homes, and farmland, making life safer and more stable for the community in Chuinj. The findings show the importance of proactive, site-specific structural interventions in mitigating natural hazards and supporting long-term livelihood security. This research not only provides practical solutions for Chuinj Village but also offers a scalable framework for similar high-risk regions globally.
