DIABETIC RETINOPATHY USING MACHINE LEARNING
This paper presents an Intelligent Diabetic Retinopathy Detection System (IDRDS), an advanced AI platform that leverages Machine Learning (ML) and deep learning algorithms to accurately identify and classify diabetic retinopathy (DR) stages from retinal fundus images. With the increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide, early diagnosis of DR is critical to prevent vision loss and blindness.IDRDS distinguishes itself by enabling automated, human-level detection of subtle retinal abnormalities, including microaneurysms, haemorrhages, and exudates, thereby assisting ophthalmologists in faster and more reliable screening.[1] The system is designed to preprocess retinal images, enhance key features, and apply convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures for feature extraction and classification.IDRDS also incorporates explainable AI techniques, providing interpretable heatmaps and visual indicators that highlight affected retinal.[2] Automated analysis helps in large-scale screening programs, reducing workload for healthcare professionals and improving accessibility in rural and underserved areas.Blending state-of-the-art deep learning models with image processing techniques, IDRDS delivers high accuracy, robustness against image quality variations, and scalability for real-world deployment. Its applicability spans clinical diagnostics (assisting ophthalmologists in DR grading), tele-ophthalmology solutions (enabling remote patient screening), public health programs (early detection campaigns), and research applications (data-driven insights into DR progression).[3] The system combines supervised learning models with continuous feedback loops, creating a hybrid approach that improves model performance and reliability over time. This work demonstrates how combining machine learning, image analysis, and explainable AI can transform diabetic retinopathy detection, making diagnosis faster, more accurate, and widely accessible.Beyond classification, the framework supports multi-stage DR severity analysis, enabling detailed grading that aligns with clinical standards for treatment planning.Advanced preprocessing methods, such as contrast enhancement and noise suppression, improve detection of minute lesions and subtle pathological changes.Validation on diverse datasets confirms strong generalization, while the use of balanced sampling techniques addresses challenges posed by class imbalance.By integrating these innovations, IDRDS represents a significant step toward AI-assisted ophthalmology, offering a powerful tool to enhance early detection and reduce the global burden of preventable blindness.
