The modern legal system has been facing several innovations for many years. One of these new trends consists of artificial intelligence systems and their impact on legal activity. There is no doubt that, like any innovation, artificial intelligence also brings with it many positive and negative effects. In any case, in the light of the changing world and technological innovations, it is quite important for legal science to evaluate innovative tools and use their potential to the maximum. In this regard, in order to understand the impact of artificial intelligence on legal science, as well as to understand deeply the interaction of artificial intelligence-based systems with legal activity, it is necessary to determine its legal nature and form a unified approach. This research paper attempts to determine the legal nature of artificial intelligence and analyzes the potential difficulties faced in forming a unified approach. To this end, the author conducts a doctrinal analysis by examining international experience and the legislative activity of a number of developed countries, compares the positive and negative sides of a possible legal definition, and ultimately, presents a unified approach to artificial intelligence and justifies the need for a balanced regulatory method. Keywords: artificial intelligence, definition, machine-based system, collection of algorithmic systems, unified approach, legal act, technology.
