Analysis of the upper respiratory tracts of patents with idiopathic condyle resorption

Objective. Comparative analysis of the volume of the upper respiratory tracts — V (mm3), the diameter of the upper respiratory tract — MAP (mm2), the level of daytime sleepiness in patients with idiopathic condyle resorption and control group patients. Material and methods. According to the research’s objective, a research group of 20 female patients with idiopathic condyle resorption (ICR) aged 18 to 30 years was formed. For a comparative analysis of the functional state of the upper respiratory tracts in patients with ICR and patients without TMJ dysfunction, a control group of patients was formed along with the main study group. All participants of this research were examined clinically and radiologically by cone radiation computer tomography (CRCT). Based on the CRCT imaging, a comparative analysis of anatomical and functional changes of the upper respiratory tract in the presence of ICR was carried out with an assessment of the main parameters of the study: the level of daytime sleepiness in patients, volume (V) and diameter of the upper respiratory tract (MAP) in patients of both groups. Results and discussion. A positive linear correlation was revealed, showing a directly proportional increase in V (mm3) with an increase in MAP (mm2) in patients with ICR. A similar positive linear correlation was found between V (mm3) and MAP (mm2) in the control group. A statistically significant difference in V (mm3) was revealed between patients with ICR and the control group (P < 0.05). A statistically significant difference in MAP (mm2) was revealed between patients with IMR and the control group (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the average level of daytime sleepiness between the groups (P ≥ 0.05). Conclusion. Statistical processing of the obtained results demonstrates the absence of a significant relationship between such indicators as: V / MAP and daytime sleepiness in the study groups. The distal position of the mandible does not have a statistically significant effect on the manifestation of daytime sleepiness, fatness and diseases associated with impaired nasal breathing.
