Abstract

“Culture” encompasses the holistic perception of life, embracing customs, traditions, values, and practices that shape society. It binds individuals and communities together, reflecting their identity and sustaining an inseparable bond with society. In Edward Tylor’s word, “Culture is such a complex solidarity that encompasses all the knowledge, faith, art, rules and regulations, rituals and all other potentials, capabilities and habits that a man can subjugate as a part of a society” (Tylor, p.1). Culture can be divided into three parts on the basis of quality, characteristics – elite culture, folk culture, tribal culture. Among the above, the folk culture originates in folk society. The term ‘folk society’ usually refers to villagers, farmers, uneducated people and people from the lower strata of society. Various aspects and elements of folk culture have amalgamated in the works of Lakshminath Bezbaruah. The main inspiration for his literary writings was the folk society of Assam. He minutely observed all aspects prevalent in rural society and applied it to the creation of literature. Farce is an important segment of Lakshminath Bezbaruah’s literary creations, which he provided a strong base. This research discussion will analyze how the folk culture is reflected in the farcical works of Lakshminath Bezbaruah.
