LMS-VR Technology-enabled Experiential Learning in Management Accounting: A Prototype and Instructional Design Guidelines

Virtual Reality offers learners in management accounting engaging and stimulating immersive and interactive experiences, enabling effective implementation of Experiential Learning teaching methods. This innovative approach enhances understanding of accounting concepts and improves knowledge retention. However, the adoption of Virtual Reality in accounting education presents new challenges. Most existing Learning Management Systems are designed for traditional online training and lack the functionality to host Virtual Reality content effectively. This research study explores instructional design strategies to address these challenges. Specifically, it focuses on: 1.Proposing different learning activities and performance tasks supported by the learning management systems and the virtual reality immersive learning platform. 2.Developing an approach that integrates synchronous, asynchronous, and in-classroom activities into a cohesive and effective virtual reality-based experiential learning process. 3.Evaluating the feasibility of generating data flows and interfacing between different systems to enable interactive feedback along the learning process. The research study is conducted by developing, testing and refining a prototype of the learning experience through multiple peer reviews by experts, educational technologists and end-users. The learning prototype is supported by a technological infrastructure combining an open-source Learning Management System, a Virtual Reality immersive platform, and Artificial Intelligence-driven tools. Virtual reality contents are created from 360° captures or images generated by Artificial Intelligence without requiring coding. The research aims to propose methodology guidelines to design and implement successful experiential learning experiences that embed virtual reality in management accounting.
