Ethical Challenges of AI Integration in Open University Online Education: A Multidimensional Analysis
Open universities have long been at the forefront of delivering accessible education across geographical barriers. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into online learning environments promises to enhance personalized instruction, streamline administrative processes, and support automated assessments. However, rapid AI integration also brings ethical challenges such as data privacy breaches, algorithmic bias, accountability dilemmas, machine-generated misinformation, and an erosion of human-centric pedagogy. This paper provides a multidimensional analysis of these ethical challenges and discusses mitigation strategies from technical, policy, pedagogical, and global cooperation perspectives. Based on a review of the recent literature, this paper argues that while AI has transformative potential, its successful and ethical deployment in open university settings demands rigorous oversight, adaptive regulatory frameworks, and culturally inclusive AI designs. A case study is also examined to highlight lessons learned from real-world implementations.
