A Pattern Reconfigurable/Diverse MIMO Antenna with Switchable Beams for Sub-6 GHz Band Applications

This paper depicts a pattern diverse/ reconfigurable 2 port MIMO antenna applicable for sub-6 GHz bands. The proposed structure employs MIMO technology that has a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\lambda/4$</tex>, microstrip-based, radiator with two rectangular slotloaded parasitic patches around it. The antenna has a defected ground structure with two inverted L-shaped stubs. By reconfiguring the parasitic patches placed around the primary <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\lambda/4$</tex> radiator with the help of PIN diodes, the antenna's primary radiation direction could be steered in two directions, i.e., from −90° (left end-fire) to +90° (right end-fire). A good radiation pattern is obtained by altering the states of the diodes. The suggested design shows a −10 dB impedance bandwidth of a maximum 500 MHz and has a dimension of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$80 \times 26 \times 0.5\text{mm}^{3}$</tex>
