Microstrip Patch Leaky Wave Antenna with CSRR and DGS for 5G Millimeter Wave Communication with Beam Scanning

This paper presents the design and assessment of a Microstrip Patch Leaky Wave Antenna (LWA) with Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) loaded on the patch and Defective Ground Structure (DGS) on the ground plane for 5G communications. This work aims at achieving a wide-bandwidth and beam scanning at millimeter wave frequency that ranges from 24GHz to 40GHz. The placement of CSRR on the patch improves the antenna bandwidth and radiation efficiency. The placement of DGS improved the gain of the antenna, improves impedance matching, and reduces mutual coupling. This work has obtained a high gain of 13 dBi and the scanning angle ranges from 5°-25°. The proposed antenna achieves continuous beam scanning over a wide bandwidth range, making it suitable for 5 G communications and other modern wireless applications.
