Metamaterial Inspired Sub-THz Antenna for High Data Rate Wireless Communication Applications

The demand for highspeed wireless communication is the key reason for exploring the THz frequency bands that offer enormous bandwidth and the possibility of ultra-fast data transfer. At the same time, the attractive features, like the dielectric materials translucent behavior for G -band <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(110-300 \text{GHz})$</tex> waves and spatial resolution exhibited by Gband waves, made the rapid growth of THz technology. In this paper, metamaterial (MTM)inspired antennas are presented that offer features suited to subTHz communication regime. Firstly, an Asymmetric Feed Microstrip Antenna (AFA) is designed to operate at 0.215 THz, which is considered as subTHz band. Then the design is modified to achieve large bandwidth and high gain. The improved performance is achieved by truncating the ground plane and loading a novel NearZero refractive index metamaterial (NZRIMTM) surface with the radiating patch. The proposed AFA exhibits 11.66 GHz bandwidth (BW). The Asymmetric Feed Truncated Ground Antenna (AFTGA) shows an improved BW of 19.67 GHz with a gain of 2.5 dBi at 215 GHz. The Asymmetric Feed Metamaterial surface (AFA_MT) and the Asymmetric Feed Truncated Ground Metamaterial Antenna (AFTGA_MT) gave a further enhancement in BW of 1.09 GHz and 10.96 GHz with respect to AFA. The results obtained assure the proposed designs are suitable for highspeed and shortrange communication applications such as radio astronomy, nondestructive testing, and personnel security scanners.
