A Low Cost Printed Monopole Antenna on a Paper Substrate for ISM Band and 5G Communication Applications

This work presents a low-profile paper substrate antenna with a novel dipole shaped geometry. The antenna has been designed on paper substrate of permittivity 3.184 and loss tangent of 0.09 with dimensions of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.34 \lambda_{0} \times 0.23 \lambda_{0}$</tex> and with a height of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.0017 \lambda_{0}$</tex>, hence well suited for low profile sensor applications. The suggested antenna has been designed to work on the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM), 5G communication and Satellite band of applications at 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 6.4 GHz, respectively. The antenna has a maximum gain of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2 \text{dBi}, 2.3 \text{dBi}$</tex>, and 5.3 dBi at <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2.4 \text{GHz}, 3.5 \text{GHz}$</tex>, and 6.4 GHz respectively with a radiation efficiency of more than 95 %. A bending analysis at different angles are performed to justify its application in a wearable application. The novelty of this design is its low cost, ease of fabrication, multiband resonance with a simple structure and high efficiency with good gain.
