É lei no Brasil nascer livre: liberdade nos registros eclesiásticos, Palmas/Paraná
This article analyzes the impacts of the Law of Free Birth (1871) in the Campos de Palmas region, in the state of Paraná. The research is based on ecclesiastical baptism records from 1872 to 1888, in which 188 children born to enslaved women were identified. The aim of this study is to examine how the aforementioned law was applied in the region, how parish records began to be organized by the local priest, and how the legislation was interpreted by slaveholders. Beyond the Law of Free Birth, the study also seeks to understand other forms of access to freedom by enslaved individuals in the locality. The findings show that the legal framework of the time did not effectively guarantee freedom to those born of enslaved women, perpetuating relations of domination and control over their bodies and lives.
