Probiotics as a Safe and Effective Strategy Against Viral Challenges: A Review

Abstract: Viral infections present substantial public health concerns globally, which call for investigating other treatment strategies. Probiotics, as favorable live microorganisms, have become interesting for their therapeutic potential to influence immune reactions and fight against viral infections. This review seeks to assess the effectiveness and mechanisms of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of viral infections. It examines clinical evidence for probiotic interventions and determines areas of research gaps. Electronic databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were used for conducting a systematic literature review. Peer-reviewed articles were chosen after setting inclusion criteria such as randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and systematic reviews. Probiotic strains, their mechanism of action, and their clinical efficacy against viral infections were the emphasis areas. The review showed that certain probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium bifidum, have antiviral effects by stimulating immune responses, regulating cytokine production, preserving the balance of gut microbiota, and suppressing viral replication. Clinical trials show improved symptoms and shorter durations for infections, including influenza, rotavirus, and norovirus. However, variability in study designs, strain choice, and dosing regimens restrict standardization. Probiotics show encouraging antiviral action but have inconsistencies in clinical evidence to warrant further studies establishing the best strains, dosages, and long-term safety. Well-designed largescale studies need to establish probiotics as an additive treatment for viral infections.
