KARABİGA/PEGAE KALESİ YÜZEY ARAŞTIRMALARI: İLK GÖZLEMLER ve SONUÇLAR

Pegae Castle, located in the south of the Marmara Sea, was settled down on Priapos, which was known as one of the important cities of northern Troas in ancient times. Pegae appears as a large By-zantine settlement with its walls, which have survived to the present day and surround the peninsula from both land and sea, and the remains of the buildings inside the castle. It is a fortress with strong walls that dominates the south of the Marmara Sea, an important port between Kyzikos in the east and Lampsakos in the west, and an important commercial center in a strategic position at the point where the Granikos (Biga) valley meets the sea. For this reason, it constantly changed hands between the Latins and the Byzantines, who were the real powers in the region at the time. The surveys, which were carried out for the first time in 2021 under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and lasted for two seasons, increased our knowledge of this important settlement area and give an opportunity for documented and analysed the existing ruins in the castle using modern archaeologi-cal methods. Detailed analyses of the deterioration and static conditions of the existing ruins, in par-ticular mapping and underground imaging studies were carried out throughout the surveys and solu-tions proposed. And, in this short paper we will try to evaluate the results of the archaeological stu-dies carried out as a short survey at Pegae Castle by emphasizing the importance of the castle in the historical process.
