The Relationship Between Hemodialysis Length, Frequency, and Anxiety in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive, irreversible decline in kidney function, often leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) that requires hemodialysis. Patients on hemodialysis frequently experience anxiety due to its physical, psychological, and financial impact. Understanding how the duration and frequency of hemodialysis relate to anxiety can guide healthcare professionals in creating better support strategies. Objectives: This study aims to examine the relationship between hemodialysis duration and frequency with anxiety levels in CKD patients at Dr. Moewardi General Hospital. It seeks to identify patient characteristics, analyze the correlation between treatment duration and anxiety, and assess how frequency impacts anxiety levels. Methods: A quantitative, correlational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 83 CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis, selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered via questionnaires, including demographics and the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS). The Spearman Rank correlation test was used for analysis in SPSS. Results: Based on statistical analysis, the p-value was <0.05, showing a significant negative correlation between hemodialysis duration and anxiety (-0.998) and frequency and anxiety (-0.447), indicating reduced anxiety with longer and more frequent treatment. Conclusion: Duration and frequency of hemodialysis are inversely related to anxiety levels. Patients with longer, more frequent treatment experience less anxiety, highlighting the importance of psychological support for newer patients.
