Neogene sedimentation in the Austrian Danube Basin (Seewinkel, northern Burgenland)
The ‘Seewinkel’ region of northern Burgenland (eastern Austria) is located between Lake Neusiedl to the west and the Austrian–Hungarian border to the east and south. The Seewinkel region represents the largest Austrian segment in the northwestern margin of the Danube Basin of the Pannonian Superbasin. The tectonostratigraphic build-up of the Seewinkel comprises syn- to post-rift Neogene clastics and carbonates overlying a pre-rift basement of mostly crystalline Alpine units. The evolution of this part of the Danube Basin has been analysed using vintage 2D reflection seismic and legacy exploration well data, which were acquired during the early hydrocarbon exploration of the area in the 1970–80s. Although it is a vintage 2D dataset, distinct structural and sedimentary features (e.g. normal faults, intra-Pannonian clinoforms) can be mapped confidently and provide the basis, in conjunction with well data (logs and cores), for a preliminary Neogene sequence stratigraphic model of the Seewinkel basin fill. To put these findings into a more regional context, stratigraphic correlations with facies-equivalent formations of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia were made.
