Harmonising Registered Nurse Numbers with National Unique Identification Number: Ensuring Seamless Nursing Registration and Mobility under the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Act
Abstract The National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Act introduces the National Nursing and Midwifery Register (NNMR) and National Unique Identification Number (NUID) to modernise nursing regulation in India. This article advocates for harmonising the NUID with existing State Nursing Council Registered Nurse (RN) numbers to preserve professional identity while enabling seamless digital integration. RN numbers should remain the primary public identifier, with the NUID functioning as a backend digital reference. Real-time synchronisation between State and National Registers will enhance professional mobility, prevent duplication and ensure data integrity. A collaborative implementation model is crucial for a unified, credible and efficient nursing regulatory system.
