Integrating Multi-Site Knee Bioimpedance and In-Shoe Motion Monitoring in Osteoarthritis Patients

In this project, we develop towards constructing a wearable system to couple, with OA patients, multi-site knee bioimpedance and in-shoe motion monitoring. OA is a degenerative joint disease that interferes with the mobility and quality of life of many elderly and of any age. Bioimpedance analysis and real time motion tracking will enable obtaining information on the knee joint health, the activity of muscles and the distribution of body weight during movement in the proposed system. All of this can be achieved with the wearable system and without user led to carry any extra equipment, by tracking gait patterns, foot pressure distribution, heart rate and temperature. This system uses piezo sensors, gyroscopes, and temperature sensors as well, and they are integrated with wireless technologies (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi), and the sensors are used to monitor real time. The vibration motor is also integrated as a part of the system for providing therapeutic feedback to the user. Vibration Motors are applied widely within rehabilitation and pain management towards reducing pain perception, increase in blood circulation, to activate the weakened muscles and to effectively promote rehabilitation outcomes. Problems pertaining to the accuracy of the sensors and the limitations of its radio connectivity with the system are present. However, it offers great opportunities in assisting OA patients with mobility and continuous health monitoring.
