Railway Operations with AI: A Comprehensive Approach to Crowd Management, Waste Monitoring, and Security

The increasing load of traffic coupled with the inherent complications in operating the railway systems has been associated with several challenges like effective crowd control, prompt maintenance, and even safety. However, most of the current systems are not capable of averting such scenarios by real-time monitoring of the situation on the ground leading to risks of congestions, waste of resources, and safety hazards. Most of the current approaches for surveillance are reactive, manual threats are poorly managed, there are inadequate systems to counter violent acts or thievery. The present document proposes the system architecture for that purpose. The recommended approach is to design an AI system based on state-of-the-art object detection models including YOLOv8, YOLOv8s, YOLO-NAS for improving crowd control, automating trash detection, and real-time monitoring system for violence escalation. Furthermore, it also integrates theft control and predictive maintenance strategies to make better use of resources and time management. Thus, equipping railways with this system will help in creating better public amenities, improving the running of the operations, and ensuring safety, as the existing systems tend to have a lot of gaps. This research emphasizes the importance of appropriate technologies in their planning and operation to ensure great accessibility and to satisfy the ever-growing demand capacity.
