Enhancement of Power Quality for Grid Connected Hybrid PV-Wind Power Supply System with 3DOF-PID Controllers

Microgrids are main connections for various loads and at the same time many locally placed power supply systems are also established at many places. Grid integrated hybrid renewable energy power conversion systems are more popular now a days. However, a novel and precious control methodology must be implemented to supply quality power at local load bus. Among many controllers, 3rd Order Degree of Freedom - PID (3DOF-PID) controllers can able to exhibits superior performances under various operating conditions. A hybrid system consists of solar plant and wind power plant is considered in this paper which is integrated to utility power grid. Additionally, sliding mode control methods are implemented on every photovoltaic and wind power conversion systems to enable the boost converter for functioning as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) devices. A common DC bus is established by integrating all converters used in both solar plant and wind power conversion plant. An inverter is integrated between DC bus and a local load bus (LLB) of the utility grid. The paper proposes effective control method based on 3DOF-PID controllers to deliver a high-quality power at the PCC under the operation of various combinations of loads including linear and nonlinear, single and three-phase, reactive power loads etc. 3DOF-PID controllers have been developed for every converter and integrated through OPAL RT technology/modules on a Real-Time Simulator (RTS). Various results are presented through RTS accurately to test the proposed control methodologies of the grid connected hybrid PV-Wind system.
