Bluetooth Low Energy Driver for Varifocal Liquid Crystal Lenses
Liquid crystal adjustable lenses require numerous electrodes for precise phase modulation. This paper presents an electronic driver for varifocal liquid crystal lenses, engineered to control devices featuring up to 80 electrodes and requiring activation voltages below 10 VRMS. The system leverages 14-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters and a Programmable System-on-Chip microcontroller with integrated Bluetooth Low Energy for wireless control via a smartphone Graphical User Interface. Its performance is validated using 24-electrode Spiral Phase Plates and 72-electrode Spiral Diffractive Lenses, demonstrating the ability to address diverse topologies at refresh rates up to 180 frames per second. This capability enables advanced functionalities such as dynamic focusing and chromatic aberration correction.
