Reply to the “Land use and land use change emissions of forest land in Finnish provinces—an LCA dataset” by Lehtilä et al. (Int J Life Cycle Assess 30: 896–905. DOI:10.1007/s11367-025–02456-5)

We read with great interest the paper by Lehtil et al. (2025a), which presents a province-level dataset for a method for accounting for land use and land-use change (LULUC) emissions and removals of forest land in life cycle assessment (LCA).Lehtil et al. (2025a) demonstrate the dataset and underlying method for eight provinces in Finland, applied at the product level for harvested wood biomass and bioethanol production. The authors emphasize that LULUC is a significant component of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. As LCA is a broad methodology applicable in various contexts, the modeling choices should align with the goal and scope of the study (Finnveden et al. 2009).Since Lehtil et al. (2025a) did not specify the types of LCA study aims for which their dataset and method are intended, we analyze their suitability for different goal and scope settings and discuss potential issues.
