Petrographic Characterization and Optimized Analytical Approach for Fluorite‐Grade Evaluation: A Quantitative Assessment of Geo‐Complex Products From the Pianciano Mine, Castel Giuliano, Rome, Italy

ABSTRACT The beneficiation of valuable minerals from geologically complex resources, such as F‐Ca carbonatites and fluoritite mixtures, is challenging due to intricate mineral intergrowths and complex mineralogy. This limits their market potential. This study introduces an innovative approach to increasing the economic value and industrial applications of products from the Pianciano mine near Castel Giuliano in Italy. Currently, these materials are used as fluxes in the cement industry. However, the aim is to expand their use to other industries. The methodology is based on accurately quantifying fluorspar, calcite, and barite in order to increase their economic value. The approach begins with mineralogical characterization to determine the composition and distribution of the main constituents. This is followed by a granulometric analysis of particles smaller than 200 μm, which contain a higher fluorite concentration. This study presents an integrated approach combining physical separation techniques with targeted chemical treatments to selectively isolate fluorspar content and, in the future, rare earth elements (REEs) and yttrium (Y), thereby enhancing the purity and economic value of the recovered fractions. The proposed methodology offers a framework for improving the beneficiation efficiency of complex mineral resources, with promising implications for industrial scalability and increased revenue‐to‐cost ratios, particularly in the context of the Pianciano Mine.
