Numerical investigation of vertical vortex-Induced vibrations response of a typical streamline box girder
Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) can critically affect the aerodynamic behavior and structural integrity of streamlined box girders, especially in long-span bridge applications. In this study, a detailed numerical investigation is conducted to analyze the vertical VIV response of a typical streamlined box girder using two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations. The computational domain is designed with suitable boundary conditions to replicate an unconfined flow field, minimizing artificial interference. A series of reduced flow velocities is examined to capture the initiation, development, and cessation of the lock-in phenomenon. The resulting time-history data of vertical displacement provide insights into the amplitude growth, stabilization, and decay phases of VIV, offering a comprehensive understanding of the vibration characteristics under varying aerodynamic conditions and enhancing the predictive accuracy for engineering design.
