Biotechnological Tools in Food Safety Monitoring
Food safety is an ever-present global concern that affects public health, trade, and livelihoods. In recent years, advances in biotechnology have produced a broad array of tools-molecular diagnostics, biosensors, mass spectrometry, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), omics technologies, and data-driven analytics-that can detect pathogens, toxins, chemical residues, and adulteration more rapidly and in more situations than classical laboratory methods. This review synthesizes literature from 2018-2025, emphasizing practical, fieldoriented solutions and real-world validations. We discuss principles, typical performance metrics, samplepreparation challenges, regulatory considerations, and pathways to adoption. We close with a human-centered view on how these technologies can be responsibly integrated into food systems to reduce risk and improve resilience.
