Management of the Emergency Airway: Clinical Considerations and Practical Strategies for Resident Physicians
Abstract Emergency airway management is one of the most commonly performed procedures, with approximately 400,000 intubations completed in emergency settings in the United States each year. Challenges associated with this procedure include anatomical and physiological factors and the experience of the physician performing it. For resident physicians, who are at an early stage in their careers, managing such emergency situations can be particularly stressful. Familiarity with structured algorithms and a range of airway techniques is crucial. Developing confidence and skill through repeated practice and supervision can significantly improve outcomes. This review article aims to provide clinical considerations and practical strategies that can assist resident physicians in effectively managing airways in emergency situations.
