The Intercultural Ethics of AI-Driven Mobile Language Translation: A Diffractive Reading of Contemporary Discourses on a ‘Trustworthy AI’
How do users experience AI-driven mobile language translation services in informal settings and how can these scenarios be assessed in the light of intercultural ethics? This article reports a diffractive reading of the contemporary interdisciplinary literature on the subject. The respective discourses follow various ethical narrations but share their goal of aiming for a trustworthy AI. However, these discourses mainly focus on epistemological issues whereas posthumanist thought in intercultural ethics encourages experiencing these phenomena from a less anthropocentric, decolonised and more ontological stance. This article offers a posthumanist repositioning of intercultural AI ethics at the example of mobile translation services.
