EVALUATION OF GROWTH AND YIELD OF FOUR VARIETIES OF CABBAGE (Brassica oleraceae L) IN FOREST SAVANNA TRANSITION ZONE OF EDO STATE

The field experiment was carried out to evaluate the cabbage adaptability and yield in Ekpoma and its environs and to determine the best yield variety of cabbage, Brassica oleracea at the Teaching and Research Farm, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. The four varieties are Cabbage Cabbage amarisa bold F1, Pakse F1, F1 Fortune and Nuzaka. The varieties measured plant height, number of leaves, total leaf area, stem girth. Also yield components were measured, such as: number of heads: circumference of the head, fresh matter yield, dry matter yield, and head yield of cabbage. The result shows that Pakse F1 has the highest yield and F1 has the highest dry matter. The highest yield (1.57) Pakse and (1.2) F1 Fortune was obtained from Farmpay, Ibadan, Oyo State. Among the varieties tested, Pakse F1 consistently produced the highest yield, making it the most promising option for farmers in the region. F1 Fortune also demonstrated good performance, particularly in terms of dry matter content. Based on these findings, the Pakse F1 variety is recommended for optimal cabbage production in Ekpoma and surrounding areas.
