Effect of Electrochemically Synthesized Graphene on the Low‐Temperature Properties of Random Copolymer Polypropylene

ABSTRACT Although random copolymer polypropylene (PPR) possesses high strength and toughness, its impact resistance at low temperatures is significantly inadequate. Previous research has paid limited attention to low‐temperature impact properties. To address this issue, this study utilized platelet graphene as a nucleating agent and successfully prepared a low‐temperature impact‐resistant polypropylene composite via melt blending. Notably, both aspects of the work conducted in this study yielded positive results: An electrochemical exfoliation method was first designed to synthesize few‐layer, large‐area graphene. Subsequently, by incorporating only 0.05 wt% of this graphene, the polypropylene composite exhibited a remarkable enhancement in properties: its crystallinity increased by over 60%, its low‐temperature impact resistance improved by 60%, and its room‐temperature mechanical properties were also significantly enhanced. These improvements benefit from the two‐dimensional structure of graphene, which can induce the formation of additional beta‐crystal form in polypropylene, thereby enhancing its toughness. These findings not only provide significant implications for improving the low‐temperature performance of PPR but also furnish experimental evidence to support expanding the application of PPR in extremely cold environments.
