ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES: ASSESSING SUSTAINABILITY, RISKS, AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS

New technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, biotechnology, 3D printing, and block chain are triggering speedy change in many industries, promising breakthroughs in efficiency, creativity, and sustainability. These emerging technologies can potentially solve long-standing issues on the global agenda in healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and environmental management.Though they bring spectacular advantages in terms of the integration of renewable energy, the use of resources optimized, and natural restoration, these new technologies carry unprecedented environmental threats as well.Excessive energy usage in the training of AI models, nanomaterial toxicological issues, genetically modified organism risks, 3D printing waste generation, and block chain carbon footprints are some of the complicities entailed. This review critically analyzes both the sustainability benefits of these new technologies and their negative environmental implications. It references life cycle assessment methodologies, circular economy principles, and governance frameworks to develop a holistic evaluation methodology. The paper also emphasizes ethical, social, and policy considerations, highlighting the necessity for responsible and equitable technology adoption. Finally, this review seeks to offer a guide for researchers, industry, and policymakers to create innovation that balances technological advancement with ecological care and social justice, thereby supporting resilient and low-impact development that is consistent with international sustainability objectives.
