Effect of Al(PO3)3 concentration on radiophotoluminescence properties in Ag-doped phosphate glasses

Radiophotoluminescence (RPL) is an emission phenomenon arising from luminescence centers formed by ionizing radiation (RPL centers). Ag-doped phosphate glasses that exhibit RPL have been used in the personal dosimeter sold as “glass badge.” Previous studies have investigated both the RPL properties and the mechanism of RPL center formation in this glass. However, many issues concerning the RPL properties of this glass remain unresolved. In this study, we measured RPL and electron spinresonance (ESR) spectra of (1-x)NaPO 3 –xAl(PO 3 ) 3 –0.0009Ag 2 O glasses to clarify how the RPL properties at room temperature depend on Al concentration in Ag-doped phosphate glasses. The sensitivity of the RPL intensity to X-rays decreased with increasing Al(PO 3 ) 3 concentration, and the RPL properties were lost in glasses with higher Al contents (x = 0.8 and 1.0). The decrease in the sensitivity of the RPL intensity and the loss of the RPL properties are related to the reduction in ESR signal intensities and the absence of Ag 2+ and Ag 2 + in the ESR spectra, respectively. In addition, the ESR signal of Ag 0 was also observed in the glasses that did not exhibit RPL. This result suggests that the presence of Ag 0 does not directly correlate with the exhibition of RPL properties. • We investigated how the RPL properties at room temperature depends on Al concentration in Ag-doped phosphate glasses. • ・The sensitivity of the RPL intensity to X-rays decreased with increasing Al(PO 3 ) 3 concentration. • ・The RPL properties were lost in glasses with higher Al contents. • ・The presence of Ag 2+ and Ag 2 + species is essential for RPL to occur. • ・We suggest that the presence of Ag 0 does not directly correlate with the exhibition of RPL properties.
