Heme-like structure of iron-based photocatalyst mediate oxalic acid for simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) and As(III)

The presence of carcinogenic heavy metals hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent arsenic (As(III)) poses significant threats to human health and environmental safety. In order to address this issue, an iron-based photocatalyst with a heme-like structure (HMS-Fe) was developed. HMS-Fe combined with oxalic acid (OA) demonstrated effective removal of both Cr(VI) and As(III) under light condition. It converts highly toxic Cr(VI) into low-toxicity Cr(III) and oxidizes As(III) to more treatable As(V). Moreover, HMS-Fe demonstrates the same long-lasting, effective performance as commercial catalysts over multiple cycles. Overall, the simultaneous remediation of Cr(VI) and As(III) via Heme-like structure of iron-based photocatalyst provides an effective treatment for heavy metals in wastewater.
